Red phone: Dangerous driving
Jun 6, 2008
 By Morgan Hill Staff

Dangerous driving

My husband and I have relocated to Morgan Hill/Holiday Lake almost a year ago and have noticed the high speed of vehicles driving to the lake on East Dunne past Holiday Lake Estates entrance. I am a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy so possibly I am more aware of this problem than most because I have seen the horror that car accidents can inflict on people and their families. I feel something must be done about this problem. I was nearly hit last week-end while walking on this road and I did report it and feel that nothing was accomplished by doing so. Just the noise of these speeding cars is annoying in itself as our house backs up to the road and the screeching of tires is continuous especially on weekends. I am asking for any one who is interested about this problem to help me bring awareness to the proper authorities. I do know that something can be done, it's just a matter of if they choose to do so. It is up to the citizens to act. I can be contacted at the following e-mail address: beniciareader@aol.com. Let's band together and do something about this because I realize it will only get worse, not better, if we don't act now.

Red Phone: It's good to see that you are taking initiative reader. Because of its scenery and roads, the Holiday Lake area is starting to become a popular destination for organized drives. Visitors may come from all over the Bay Area, so it's not surprising that a few may engage in "spirited" driving along your neighborhood roads.

Most drivers these days are equipped with a false sense of security and don't realize the dangers of driving until it's too late. Although new developments and technology in vehicles may help in certain situations, there's no replacement for common sense (which seems to be in short supply behind the wheel these days). Red Phone has seen its share of freak accidents related to dangerous backroads driving.

So now what? Readers, contact Beniciareader (beniciareader@aol.com). Help her organize against the reckless drivers and prevent accidents that could potentially take a life. In the meantime, submit traffic inquiries to www.morgan-hill.ca.gov/html/contact/inquiry.asp. It would be hard to brush off a sudden large volume of complaints. Also, contact the Morgan Hill Police Department at their non-emergency line (408) 779-2101.

Driving enthusiasts should know that if you wish to engage in aggressive driving, obviously it's better to do it in a controlled environment. There are tons of events all around the Bay Area where you can legally and most importantly, safely, push your vehicle to its limit. Autocrosses are held at De Anza College and the Oakland Colussium. The San Francisco region also has three racetracks: Infineon Raceway, Laguna Seca, and Thunderhill. For more information, start at: www.sfrscc.org.

Theater vs. school teachers

My comment is about the April 11 issue. There is an article about how they are going to lay off or might lay off 28 teachers and cutting $3 million from the school budget. On the same page but different article explaining that the school district is going to construct a $5 million Live Oak High School theatre. Teachers are way more important then a theatre. Why don't we save the teachers' jobs and have the students use the Morgan Hill community theater downtown?

Red Phone: We appreciate your concerns for our teachers, reader. Unfortunately, the school district cannot allocate money from restricted funds to pay for salaries. These restricted funds, also known as categorical funds, were provided by a bond issued in 1999 that specifically allocates money towards our educational facilities. As for the teachers: out of the 28 teachers that had their jobs threatened, four were cut.
